Playing music in front of a crowd, at a club or house party, requires many preparations and the necessary equipment may present all sorts of difficulties. One DJ gives you the possibility of creating and customizing your own mixing environment. Besides its flexible customization options, the software provides many other features, which can make your work easier. The possibility of editing and re-mixing audio tracks during playback, easier MIDI mapping or advanced synchronization capabilities are just a few examples of what it has to offer.

One DJ is available in a freeware version, but it doesn't offer as many features as the paid one. The software is compatible with all popular Windows platforms and it doesn't take long to install it. Also, you don't have to sacrifice too many resources or install any prerequisite tools.

The software comes with a modular user interface, which is fully customizable. By default, it displays two player decks, two effect racks, a mixer and a file browser. The program allows you to switch between different layouts, including one that features four player decks, but you can also create new layouts from scratch. You can insert any number of player decks and other elements, resize them and arrange the gear however you want, within the main user interface.

With the built-in file browser, you can explore and manage the program's audio library, as well as audio files from your local folders or iTunes library. You can start playing and mixing your tunes by simply clicking and dragging the audio files over the player decks. Just like in other similar programs, loaded audio tracks are displayed as waveforms, but in One DJ, they are also color-coded, based on frequency, which makes it quite easy to locate a specific part of a song.

One DJ provides a few audio editing features as well. Once you load an audio track on a player deck, you can hit an Edit button, on the same deck and perform various actions, like splitting and stretching the track, inserting cue points and more. Another useful feature is the possibility of managing the audio routing, which can be done on a dynamic overview panel. Thanks to the overview panel's visual feedback, you can figure out if the audio signal is routed properly without too much effort. You can also reroute the signal anyway you want. All you have to do is create new connections between a series of modules, by simply clicking and dragging between their connection points.

Pros

The software provides a wide variety of audio mixing features. Its modular user interface can be customized, to create new layouts, with any number of player decks, mixers or other elements. Also, One DJ makes it very easy to route the audio signal according to your own needs.

Cons

The free version is a bit limited, compared to the paid one. When it comes to preparing for live mixing, One DJ gives you complete freedom to customize your gear and make it work however you want.
